People in the towns surrounding the Temelín Nuclear Power Station have lived with its looming presence since construction began in 1987, but are no longer terribly concerned about their safety. While the plant contributes financially through employment opportunities and community investment, they mostly complain about the significantly higher cost of their electricity compared to other regions within the Republic.
Located in the San Francisco Bay Area, the National Ignition Facility in Livermore aims to change the fundamentals of electricity production through nuclear fusion. Heralded by some scientists as an impossible goal, NIF assures that they are only a year away from achieving fusion - which, they say, could provide safe, affordable, clean power for the entire earth.
